Sanford Dominio Del Falcon Pinot Noir
One of our most cherished, elegant wines, Dominio del Falcon, named for a pair of falcons, who chose this block for their nest. The top of this east facing ridge is the highest point of the Rinconada Vineyard and a stunning vantage point over the Sta. Rita Hills, so this site was a wise choice for these beautiful raptors. Clone 2A is planted in the loose, loamy soil, high in diatomaceous earth, resulting in a bright, seamlessly beautiful wine.
PROFILE & WINEMAKING
Earthy red fruits, with floral notes jump out of the glass. Bright acidity focuses the palate, keeping it quite lively. Silky tannins give delicious integration to the structure of this wine, and while quite approachable now, has the backbone to age gracefully for the next 10 to 12 years. A delicate hand was needed in crafting this Pinot, with gentle punch downs and aging in the best Burgundian cooperage for 14 months before bottling.
96 Points: “More rounded, supple notes of currants, spiced cherries, leafy herbs, and forest floor emerge from the 2015 Pinot Noir Dominio Del Falcon. Just gorgeous on the palate, with no hard edges, a layered, beautifully balanced style, and a great finish, it’s a killer, Burgundian styled beauty to drink over the coming decade or more. This cuvée is named for a pair of falcons who nest near the vineyard and comes from the highest point in the La Rinconada Vineyard. All from Clone 2A, it spent 14 months in 35% new French oak.” — Jeb Dunnuck
