Sanford Sanford & Benedict Chardonnay
The 2014 is the third release of our single vineyard Sanford & Benedict Vineyard Chardonnay. Made from the original Chardonnay vines planted in this iconic vineyard, this wine is very different from the Chardonnays produced from the adjacent La Rinconada Vineyard and has quickly become a favorite. We were honored that the 2013 garnered much critical acclaim and we believe that the 2014 may be even better, with a truly lovely texture and balance.
PROFILE & WINEMAKING
Light golden with a slight green hue, the 2014 Sanford & Benedict Chardonnay entices with aromas of grilled lemon and white flowers. The focused palate is bright and tense, with distinctive minerality. This is always our most “old world” Chardonnay. The fruit from this old, own rooted vineyard block was gently whole cluster pressed and fermented in French Oak, where it was allowed to gently age for 14 months with occasional lees stirring. Only 10 barrels were selected for this bottling.
93 Points: "Though a bit older than most current Chardonnays, this bottling from the region's most historic vineyard hardly shows a hint of age. Aromas of lemon curd, lime zest and walnut are both fresh and warm on the nose. The palate is lively with Bosc pear flavors yet also leans rich, with sea salt caramel and a hint of butterscotch riding far into the finish." - Wine Enthusiast
93 Points: "The smallest production 2014 Sanford & Benedict Chardonnay was also raised in 35% new French oak (with plenty of lees contact). It's more fresh and lively than the La Rinconada and offers terrific notes of ripe pear, buttered apples, white flowers and a touch of minerality. It too has ample concentration and depth on the palate (which can be lacking in many 2014 Chardonnays), a touch of toasted nuts on the finish, good acidity and a dry, classic finish. It's certainly one of the finest Chardonnays I've tasted from this estate." - Jeb Dunnuck
