Sanford Founders' Vines Chardonnay
It all started with a pioneering vision to grow Chardonnay in a remote coastal region of California that was long considered far too cool to ripen grapes. Fortunately, the founders, Michael Benedict and Richard Sanford, had determination and perseverance in establishing the Sanford & Benedict Vineyard in 1971. As the stewards of this iconic property, we have tremendous respect for what these partners accomplished, and from one of the original, own-rooted, plantings of Chardonnay, we are proud to share the 2016 Founders’ Vines Chardonnay, only the third vintage of our most prestigious, limited release white wine.
PROFILE & WINEMAKING
We selected just 2 barrels for this elegant and savory wine with plenty of aroma volume to spare! Jasmine, pear blossom, chestnut and hazelnut, beeswax and a flinty note entice on the nose. On the palate, the wine is rich and concentrated at first and then gradually the acidity emerges on a long, rich finish. Whole cluster pressed, and barrel fermented in French oak the wine showcases this singular site. This wine is a natural with shellfish, sushi, or ceviche.
92 Points: "Acacia-blossom, light butter and Meyer lemon-peel aromas show on the nose of this bottling from vine planted in the early 1970s. Rounded flavors of toast, baked nectarine and lemon zest are rich yet sliced with acidity." —M.K Wine Enthusiast
