Sanford Sanford & Benedict Viognier

THE STORY
While better known as a producer of serious Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, there are a few acres of this white Rhône variety grown at our iconic Sanford & Benedict Vineyard. The combination of cool climate and rocky, clay-loam soil makes a vibrant and balanced Viognier with the structure of its old-world counterparts.
PROFILE & WINEMAKING
The beauty of growing Viognier in the Sta. Rita Hills is that even at full ripeness, the grapes maintain lovely acidity. After hand harvesting at night, we barrel fermented in neutral French oak using native yeast and allowed the wine to age on the lees for 14 months. Highly complex aromas conjure ripe citrus and stone fruits, jasmine, and smoky minerals that show fine definition and saline lift. The elegant palate exudes Meyer lemon, and honeysuckle that are supported by an undercurrent of juicy acidity, bursting with richness and powerful, yet surprisingly lithe as well.
